Nurturing Creativity amidst Professional Monotony

April 21, 2023

Hey there, all you creative folks who have been grinding away at your jobs. You know those times when your brain just feels stuck and the goddess of creativity seems to have left the building? It's like your brain has turned into a rusty old machine and you're just staring at a blank wall, desperately trying to come up with some fresh ideas but ending up feeling like a total sloth. If you're constantly wondering why your brain isn't working its magic like it used to, don't worry, you're not alone!

A lot of creatives experience this which is often termed as a ‘Creative Block’ wherein they feel their creative power reducing. However, this often happens to people who have been working at a professional setting for quite some time. It’s like that muscle that becomes weak if you don’t exercise it regularly.

Why does this happen? Let’s go back in time a little.

Childhood is the pinnacle of creativity. For a kid, the world is their oyster where they can paint it the way they want. There are no rules or restrictions. As you grow up, world starts to train you not only with the tools to survive and thrive but also to comply along the societal regulations. You start to use creativity towards more professional pursuits. And then the boredom and monotony sets in. You don’t realise when you’ve stopped being creative because you’re so caught up in the professional rat race. You start learning professional skills which improves with repetition. Creative skills on the other hand improve with care and intention.

So how do you not let the monotony of your job make you uncreative. Following are a few ideas to practice in order to start exercising the creative muscle.

  1. Relax : A lot of times the creativity lag happens when the mind is tired or stressed. A great way to rest a tired mind is through some sleep, a walk or doing some light stretch.

  2. Change the environment : Working in a environment that inhibits creativity can also lead to this creative block which is why you might have seen people changing their environment. Moving from their designated workspace to a more open place at work, working at a cafe or a meeting room.

  3. Do something different : Once in a while, watch a movie(preferably a different genre), go for a run, do yoga or travel to different countries/cities. I am a big fan of animated movies and I make sure to watch them once in a while.

  4. Make something with your hands : It’s very important for a creative person to make something with their hands. Getting a hobby like making art or craft, playing an instrument, creating clay sculptures, building architecture models, playing with Raspberry Pi or being a plant parent brings a deeper connection to your work. It also relieves anxiety and decreases stress.

Thus, it is extremely important for people to keep exercising their creative muscle so that we all don’t become boring cogs in the wheel who are running just after money. You owe being creative to not only yourself but also to this world by caring for them. Creativity is our way be grateful to the humankind.
